The virtual memory program for Windows stores RAM images on the hard drive so that the computer can free up RAM space for other uses. If the computer didn’t have virtual memory, it would require you to close one program before opening another if you had more than a few programs open at the same time.

When using virtual memory, the application looks for portions of the RAM that aren’t used often and then copies those portions as an image to the page file on the hard drive.  The operating system will then move back and forth between the physical RAM and the paging file to read the files it needs to operate.

There are several common questions about using virtual memory:

Why do I get the error message: “Your system is low on virtual memory. Windows is increasing the size of your virtual memory paging file.”?

This is the most common error message you will see regarding virtual memory. It means that the maximum level that is set for the page file is probably too low. The paging file size is set as the default to 1.5 times the actual physical RAM on your computer. Increasing this amount will help you avoid common virtual memory error messages and program freezes. Many techs will advise increasing this amount to twice the RAM that you have installed.

Get into the virtual memory page file and adjust these settings.

  1. Go to Start and click on Control Panel.

  2. Choose Advanced. Choose Settings in Performance tab

  3. You will see the Virtual Memory box. Click Change.

  4. This will bring you to the paging file information box.

  5. Click on Custom to change the Initial and Maximum settings. Click on Set and then choose Ok.

After shutting down the computer, I’m now getting page file errors. Why?

Sometimes an improper shutdown can cause page file errors. It should be relatively easy to fix.  Get into the virtual memory page file and then select “no page file”. Get into your directory and find PAGEFILE.SYS and delete it. Reboot the computer, go back into the virtual memory and recreate the page file as it was before.  This should create a new, non-corrupted page file. From now on, make sure to do a complete shutdown rather than pressing the Power button.

I’ve increased my page file size, but I’m still getting low virtual memory errors. Why?

Sometimes you need to get to the root of the problem, rather than fix it with a patch. If you don’t have enough RAM installed on your computer, increasing the file size may not be enough. You may have to bite the bullet and purchase more. Once the right amount of RAM is installed, increase the page file size and you should see the end of errors. You can also increase available memory by deleting programs that you no longer need. Be sure to empty the Recycle Bin after deleting them to get them completely off your system.
